The Sniper Behind the Scenes: Lenny S. on rapfabulous CONVOS

This Lenny S interview takes CONVOS behind the curtain. For years, the series has brought you the artists, producers and actors who built hip-hop. This time Lenny Santiago sat down with Mic Fox on the famous gold couch at Roc Nation. The industry knows him as Lenny S. Instagram knows him as Kodak Lens. The conversation covers 30 years of work most fans never see.

A Bronx Kid Finds His Calling

Lenny came up in the Bronx by way of Puerto Rico. He grew up around the Grand Concourse and Burnside. Two moments made him fall in love with hip-hop. At 12 or 13, a coworker of his mom’s took him to a Kid Capri party in Kingsbridge. Then he watched Run-DMC hold up their Adidas at Madison Square Garden. Thousands of fans held theirs up too. That was it.

Hustle Before There Was a Blueprint

Lenny started out putting up posters and stickers for Showbiz & A.G. and Black Sheep. Official street teams barely existed yet. Later, he worked a job building cables for a production lighting company. He quit the minute Bad Boy called. The next day he learned the street team gig paid nothing. He stayed anyway.

His first real check came at Christmas 1995. It was $250. He spent every dollar on a Bad Boy plaque for his wall.

Betting on Roc-A-Fella

Then Lenny bet on a label few people believed in yet. He left Bad Boy for Roc-A-Fella. Jay-Z recognized him from the Bad Boy street team and turned him down. Lenny kept showing up anyway. Eventually Jay said enough is enough.

He became employee number 089. From there he moved into A&R. His first project was the Streets Is Watching soundtrack. He went on to steer Memphis Bleek’s first three albums.

Stories From Inside the Room

Some of these stories only come from someone who was there.

Lenny watched Pharrell build the beat and hook for what became “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me).” He texted Jay to get to the studio fast. Jay knocked out his verses in about 15 minutes. The team scrapped “Parking Lot Pimpin'” as the single on the spot.

He also tried to buy records from an early DJ Khaled. Khaled refused to sell because he knew those songs would make him. Lenny later helped bring Khaled to Def Jam with the late Shakir Stewart.

He breaks down the making of Watch the Throne, from the hotel sessions to the Givenchy merch. He also shares how he helped bring Rapsody into the Roc Nation family.

The Story of the Gold Couch

Yes, you’ll hear how the gold couch came to be. Rihanna jumped on it first and posted a photo. Today the couch gets booked more than Lenny does.

What’s Next for Lenny S.

Lenny opens up about what kept him out of the street economy. He talks about his coffee table book deal through Roc Lit 101. The books draw from decades of behind-the-scenes photos. He’s also moving into producing film and TV. And the Bronx named him a 2026 Walk of Fame inductee. In his words, only his kids mean more.

Everything he builds comes back to one goal. He wants to leave a legacy for his kids.
